Wanderer above the Sea of Fog

Caspar David Friedrich’s Wanderer above the Sea of Fog is one of the defining masterpieces of German Romanticism. Painted around 1817, the work shows an anonymous man standing on a rocky summit, his back turned toward us as he looks across a vast landscape covered by a sea of mist. Mountains, cliffs and distant peaks appear through the fog, while much of the land beneath him remains hidden.

The landscape may look like a single real location, but Friedrich did not simply reproduce one view. He frequently travelled through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, also known as Saxon Switzerland, near Dresden. During those journeys he made detailed drawings of rocks, mountain ranges and natural formations. Back in his studio, he combined elements from several different sketches to construct an imagined landscape. The landscape in the finished painting therefore does not exist exactly as we see it; it is a carefully composed vision built from real observations of nature.

At the centre stands the mysterious wanderer. He wears a dark green coat, carries a walking stick and faces away from us. Friedrich often used this type of figure, known in German as a Rückenfigur, or “figure seen from behind.” Instead of showing the man’s expression, Friedrich invites the viewer to imagine standing in his position. We look toward the landscape with him, yet his body also blocks part of our view. This creates a deliberate tension: we are drawn into his experience but can never completely know what he sees or what he feels.
