Behind the artwork
A piece with something to say.
The story follows a young girl known for her red hooded cloak. Her mother sends her through the forest to visit her grandmother, carrying a basket of food and provisions. Along the way, she encounters a wolf, who learns where she is going and takes a shortcut to the grandmother’s house. In the best-known versions of the tale, the wolf reaches the house first, devours the grandmother, disguises himself in her clothes, and waits for Little Red Riding Hood. The familiar exchange follows: “What big eyes you have!” and “What big teeth you have!”—before the wolf reveals his true intentions.
Ferrier, however, captures the story at an earlier and far more ambiguous moment.
Little Red Riding Hood stands on a woodland path in her vivid scarlet cloak and flower-decorated hood, carrying the small basket intended for her grandmother. Beside her is the very creature the viewer knows she should fear: the wolf.

But there is no mistaking his mood. The wolf turns toward her with his jaws open, baring his teeth in a menacing growl. His expression is aggressive and unmistakably threatening. Little Red Riding Hood, however, remains strangely calm. She looks down toward him with a gentle, almost playful expression, apparently unaware—or perhaps unconcerned—with the danger standing inches from her.
The contrast creates the painting’s central tension. Her bright red cloak and the scattered wildflowers lend the scene an almost idyllic, storybook quality, while the deep, shadowy forest behind them suggests that something far more sinister lurks beyond the sunlit path.
And this is where Ferrier relies upon the viewer’s knowledge of the tale. We know something Little Red Riding Hood does not. We know what the wolf is capable of, and his bared teeth become a warning that she cannot yet understand.
The painting freezes the story at the uneasy moment when innocence and danger meet.
